German court rules against YouTube over copyright

September 4, 2010 |11:10 | You Tube News  By : Team X

A German court ruled Friday that Google Inc.'s subsidiary YouTube LLC must pay compensation after users uploaded several videos of performances by singer Sarah Brightman in violation of copyright laws.

The Hamburg state court said the standardized question to users about whether they have the necessary rights to publish material is not enough to relieve YouTube of the legal responsibility for the content, especially because the platform can be used anonymously.

What It Means When YouTube Gets Small, and Big

September 3, 2010 |16:16 | You Tube News | You Tube Updates  By : Team X

YouTube, as I write in an article Friday, is following its viewers away from the computer screen to screens both big and small. People are increasingly watching videos on the tiny screens on their cellphones. YouTube gets 160 million mobile views a day, almost triple the number last year.

People watch videos on their phones if they are commuting on public transport, if they are too lazy to boot up their laptops or, in the case of Eric E. Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, when they are trying to spice up a party.

H&M Launched a Who Is Who Guessing Game on YouTube

September 2, 2010 |11:21 | You Tube News  By : Team X

H&M has made something very fresh for those who know fashion and just love guessing games. Ahead of the New York fashion week (September 9-16), the global clothing chose a new way of introducing designers, who are going to collaborate with the label within the coming months. H&M launched a great campaign titled “Designer Collaboration 2010″ and based on a series of cryptic spots, inviting to guess the disguised, still internationally famous personalities featured in them.

H&M Launched a Who Is Who Guessing Game on YouTube

The brand tapped actors to imitate the living icons of the fashion industry in the black-and-white 23-second spots, and the viewers can see only bodes of the ‘designers’ as their faces are obscured. Anyway, die-hard fashionistas will probably find it not that difficult to make their guesses based on the clothes, gestures and style of speaking. All of the videos have been posted to the brand’s YouTube channel this week.In these videos, fashion fans ‘recognized’ Thomas Maier of Bottega Veneta, Caroline Herrera of Vivienne Tam and Alber Elbaz of Lanvin among others. The right answers will be unveiled on September 9, on the day of the of New York fashion week’s launch. Until that day H&M as well as the designers ‘featured’ in the spots are keeping mute on if the fan’s assumptions are correct.

Now, Pay Per View Movies On YouTube

September 1, 2010 |11:27 | You Tube News  By : Team X

Now, Pay Per View Movies On YouTube: Google is planning to launch a pay-per-view movie section on its popular video site YouTube, according to a report Monday in the Financial Times. The web giant has reportedly been holding talks with the major Hollywood studios in order to snag films for its new service which would compete with existing sites like Netflix, iTunes and Hulu, as well as the rapidly dwindling neighbourhood video stores. Citing studio bosses, the report said that YouTube would charge up to five dollars per film - roughly the same amount that viewers of cable and satellite TV spend to view pay-per-view movies.

Google first unveiled its online movie ambitions by streaming a handful of titles from the Sundance Film Festival in January. It also announced plans earlier this year for a Google TV service which would be built into televisions and set-top boxes and provide a unique search and content system for TV viewers. The Financial Times report said that talks have been continuing for "several months" but have "taken on greater urgency in recent weeks", and that the new service could debut before the end of the year.

Youtube yet to escape Viacom's wrath

August 13, 2010 |15:38 | You Tube News  By : Team X

APPEALING AGAINST the judgment that Youtube did not infringe Viacom's copyright, despite users uploading programming, the US entertainment company apparently is hoping to win this time round. Yesterday Viacom filed an appeal with the US Second Court of Appeals in New York, asking federal judges to reconsider the victory awarded to Youtube and its parent Google.

The case stems from a complaint filed by Viacom alleging that Google owned Youtube was generating advertising profits from videos that had been taken illegally from Viacom broadcasts and uploaded to the website. A judge ruled in favour of Google in June, ending a three-year legal campaign that included accusations of blackmail and fabricating evidence.

Google, YouTube to the rescue at Mumbai port

July 16, 2010 |15:49 | You Tube News  By : Team X

It took emergency officials over five hours to figure out that the mysterious gas leaking from a container at Mumbai Port Trust early on Wednesday was chlorine. But they had had no training on tackling the leak. So they did the next best thing they could: they Googled “how to manage chlorine leak”.

The search threw up links to several documents and the officials — working out of Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research, just across the wall from the chlorine containers — began poring over them, sources told The Indian Express.

YouTube and Hollywood to Produce a User-Generated Documentary

July 8, 2010 |18:30 | You Tube News  By : Team X

The user-generated experimental project kicks off on July 24, 2010—this day will become the ‘key character’ of the spots and the film itself. The users are encouraged to tell the world how they live, bring their personal attitude to what’s going on around them.

And try to be as open and imaginative as possible. The amateur filmmakers are asked to keep from shooting trademarks, clips, movies, etc. to avoid product placement—this being the only restriction. The works are to be uploaded between July 24 and July 31 to the Life in a Day channel on YouTube.
