U2 a hit on YouTube

October 27, 2009 |14:15 | You Tube Event | You Tube News  By : Team X

U2 a hit on YouTubeThe website is expecting its streaming video of the band's Rose Bowl show to produce big numbers when a final tally of viewers is released as early as today.

U2's concert at the Rose Bowl shattered attendance records at the venue as more than 100,000 people, including Rose Bowl staff, took in the band's Southern California stop on its 360 Tour, according to the venue's general manager, Darryl Dunn. Yet the number of fans who watched the concert online probably dwarfs that tally.

Final figures aren't in yet from Google-owned YouTube, which streamed the concert live, but the page housing the concert has received close to 7 million "channel views."  A YouTube spokesman expects to have viewership numbers today, but does note that the concert was the top global-trending topic on Twitter while it was streaming. The promotional clip advertising the concert received 2.7 million views.

YouTube may revive music streaming as PRS for Music cuts royalties

YouTube may revive music streaming as PRS for Music cuts royalties

The music royalties collection body for the UK has sharply cut its prices for internet music tracks, paving the way for more online streaming services.  Under the new pricing plan from PRS for Music, which represents composers and lyricists, digital music sites will have to pay 0.085p for each track streamed, down from the previous rate of 0.22p.

PRS, which negotiates song and lyrics licence fees for the public performance of music, has agreements with radio stations, television broadcasters and online music channels in the UK. It said that the new plan would "enable the digital market to grow".

The cut may entice YouTube and popular "internet radio" service Pandora back to the UK market.  YouTube blocked premium music videos to UK users in March after failing to reach a new licensing agreement with the PRS. Pandora ended its UK stream at the start of 2008, saying that the old rate was prohibitively expensive.

YouTube works with Hollywood agency for new content

February 3, 2009 |13:01 | You Tube Event  By : Team X

YouTube works with Hollywood agency for new contentYouTube's video profile is set to expand, following a deal with the William Morris Agency. At its core, the agreement would see more content that doesn't make it to prime time television or movie screens released on YouTube. Some frustration has developed with William Morris, along with YouTube, over a lack of newer and fresher content available.

Even with ad-supported videos, big media giants have been reluctant to release much on the video sharing site, for a variety of reasons. The benefit for YouTube is to get more “premium” content, which allows them to ultimately generate more advertising revenue. Ad-generated revenue on YouTube is lower than what Google expects, primarily because the majority of videos on YouTube are submitted by individuals, not by companies.

YouTube Live Event Streamed From Virgin Airline

November 20, 2008 |13:43 | You Tube Event  By : Team X

It's no secret that many airlines are offering entertainment and communications access in ground-to-air connections, but that approach will be reversed Saturday when Virgin America streams video from its planes to a Nov. 22 YouTube Live event.

The carrier's Wi-Fi-enabled plane will fly 35,000 feet above the YouTube event in San Francisco. A segment of YouTube Live will feature entertainment beamed from the circling Virgin America plane to the main event below. The demonstration will launch the airline's beta test of its Gogo in-flight Internet service, which is powered by Aircell's in-flight Wi-Fi hotspot technology.

Wi-Fi at 35,000 feet will be game changing for the YouTube community," said Chris Di Cesare, head of marketing for YouTube, in a statement. Virgin America plans to offer the Gogo Wi-Fi service across its entire fleet by the second quarter of 2009.

YouTube's Rock Band drum masters

October 18, 2008 |12:04 | You Tube Event  By : Team X

IBitePrettyHard is one of the best drummers around. I mean video game drummers. But check out this video of IBite playing the popular music simulation game Rock Band, which has taken Guitar Hero and added the option of playing drums and bass. Tell me the line that separates video drumming from the real thing isn't blurring out of existence.

You've just witnessed an "FC," or full combo, the Rock Band parlance for hitting every simulated note in perfect time, no errors. On the games' most difficult drum songs -- Rush's YYZ, for example -- that can mean thousands of stick movements and pedal kicks.

Hack Your Way Into YouTube's Olympics Channel

August 11, 2008 |11:05 | You Tube Event  By : Team X

I don't know if you guys have checked, but after the US team reviewed the NBC Olympics web player, I headed over to Yahoo!7 to see what was on offer locally. There's good news for people who just can't get enough of Mel and Kochy and the rest of the Channel 7 Olympic News Team, but bad news for anyone hoping for an immersive online video experience. Sure there's video there, but sorting through what you want isn't exactly what I'd describe as fun.

But now there's a bit of hope for some diversity, with Valleywag detailing how you can hack your way into YouTube's Olympic channel. As we discovered last week, the channel is geo-locked, but with this little hack, anyone can start watching.

Hit the link for the full instructions and fill the comments with comparisons between the YouTube effort and Yahoo!7's attempts. Which is better?

Fast-talking Fred is the toast of YouTube

June 30, 2008 |17:05 | You Tube Event | You Tube News | You Tube Updates  By : Team X

To say that Lucas Cruikshank is a minor celebrity merely reflects the fact that, at the age of 14, he's still a couple of years away from being legally able to drive, vote or get married.

But in the free-for-all world of YouTube, age - like gender, race, social rank and even talent - plays no part in the alchemy that determines success or failure in this corner of the worldwide web.

Adults might not get it, but children have clearly taken to Lucas's character Fred - a six-year-old "with anger management issues" who lives with his alcoholic mother and whose absentee father is doing time in jail.

With almost 250,000 "subscribers", Lucas's YouTube channel is now the site's fourth most subscribed of all time.

The weekly episodes, which have been running since May, include Fred gets Detention, Fred goes to the Dentist and Fred stalks Judy. All have been viewed over a million times times each, with two collecting over five million views each.

The clips, each of which runs for about three minutes, are solid PG-rated material and the sharpest word that Fred is heard to utter is "frickin".

Fred's voice is "chipmunked", meaning it plays back in the higher pitched, squeaky tones made famous by Alvin the Chipmunk and the Lollipop Guild Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz.

Easy YouTube uploads on tap for PS3 games

May 17, 2008 |13:43 | You Tube Event | You Tube News | You Tube Updates  By : Team X

Uploading in-game videos to YouTube is about to get a lot easier if you're a PlayStation 3 gamer, that is.

YouTube just announced that Sony has adopted the site's APIs and programming tools for the PS3, which will let game developers add video uploading features to existing and upcoming PlayStation 3 games.

That'll make life a lot easier for those of us who want to show off our racing, sniping, and fragging skills online. For the most part, PS3, Xbox 360, and other console gamers have been using video capture cards or simply training camcorders on their screens to record in-game videos for sharing on the Web a do-able, if somewhat cumbersome, process.

Some games, such as "Halo 3," already let you record your in-game action, but you can't just upload said videos to the Web; instead, would-be viewers must download and watch the clips on their consoles.

The first title to get the YouTube uploading feature is Japanese PS3 game "Mainichi Issho"; no word on other upcoming YouTube-enabled games just yet.

So, Microsoft...how about some YouTube love for the Xbox 360, eh?

Surprise! Student Superdelegates Endorse Obama via YouTube

May 15, 2008 |13:28 | You Tube Event | You Tube News | You Tube Updates  By : Team X

College democrat representatives Lauren Wolfe and Awais Khaleel endorsed Barack Obama on Tuesday, using YouTube to unveil their preference.

"As superdelegates who represent college students, we support senator Barack Obama," Wolfe says in the video.

"Even though we heard responses in support of both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama, there was one candidate who started out ahead, and never looked back," says Awais.

The two were among the remaining undeclared superdelegates being heavily lobbied by both the Clinton and Obama campaigns, as well as their supporters.
