YouTube is known for its viral video abundance, but the only source of income for popular video creators came from advertising.
Until now. The King of video is going to give away $5 million dollars in grants.
They're rewarding popular YouTube partners with cold hard cash, ranging from a few thousand to a few hundred thousand dollars.
The grants are targeted at successful video creators, who can use it for just about anything: better equipment, new staff, software: as long as its related to videos. YouTube's goal is to encourage creativity and higher quality videos that can compete with sites such as Hulu, which offers hit TV shows online.
The move signals a shift in strategy for YouTube, it's looking beyond the computer screen, and trying to become a video-destination instead of a place to shortly watch viral videos. A far as the grant goes, you can't just apply for it YouTube will contact eligible partners.
