As upstart Republican Scott Brown’s surge continues, President Obama has finally weighed in on the race to succeed Sen.
Edward M. Kennedy, blasting out an impassioned video plea for Attorney General Martha Coakley to thousands of Bay State voters today.
“In Washington, I’m fighting to curb the abuses of a health care industry that routinely denies care,” Obama says in the video.
“It’s clear now that the outcome of these and other fights will probably rest on one vote in the United States Senate. That’s why what happens Tuesday in Massachusetts is so important.”
As recent polls have showed, Brown is in striking distance of - or even defeating - Coakley, Democrats have mounted a furious attack against the Wrentham Republican. The national GOP has responded with attacks on Coakley and unprecedented support for Brown.
With former President Bill Clinton in town today and tomorrow stumping for Coakley, many were wondering whether Obama would put his clout on the line in the race, which could tip the scales in the Senate in favor of the GOP.
He said Coakley would be his “ally” and that “opponents of change are pouring money” into the race to block the pivotal health care reform package.
“They believe that by defeating Martha and by replacing Ted Kennedy with a Republican opponent, that they’ll be in a position to tie up the senate and prevent a vote on health insurance reform, financial reform and other issues so important for working families,” Obama says. “A lot of people don’t even realize there is an election Tuesday. So I need you to put on your walking shoes again.”
